Amikacin may be included in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis or rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (MDR/RR-TB) patients aged 18 years or more on longer regimens when susceptibility has been demonstrated and adequate measures to monitor for adverse reactions can be ensured. If amikacin is not available, streptomycin may replace amikacin under the same conditions.

Notes and Remarks

Ÿ Successful multimodal interventions should be associated with an overall organizational culture change as effective IPC can be a reflector of quality care, a positive organizational culture and an enhanced patient safety climate. Ÿ Successful multimodal strategies include the involvement of champions or role models in several cases. Ÿ Implementation of multimodal strategies within health care institutions needs to be linked with national quality aims and initiatives, including health care quality improvement initiatives or health facility accreditation bodies.
